I’ve got some kind of ocotillo and it’s my prize, I can tell it’s doing bad also. Now, all of my succulents are doing pretty poor. I look in the soil, and notice little white tiny oblong larvae ish things. This was a four year old plant at the very least. I go around the pot, to loosen up and begin transplant, then my nightmare, the plant tips over, no real roots left to speak of that are attached. Lower leaves turning black prior to their time, still full of aloe juiciness. So I thought to repot due to root bound, wasn’t looking good. And a few weeks later there was no noticeable improvement in posture. It began leaning, I assumed in search of afternoon sun. I lost a beautiful fan aloe to something in the soil. really knows how well their product works in this regard. I’ll have to look again, but I doubt that Sevin, Inc. Myself and a plethora of Aloe enthusiasts are in agreement that most foliar applications are fruitless, but Sevin really works. Spraying Sevin, only on the effected areas, a week or so apart seems to kill all mite activity (as does systemic miticide) and I’ve seen no adverse effects on adjacent flora or fauna. The alcohol is believed to smother the mites. Re alcohol: It really does work, but one must hit every mite to get rid of them as there is no residual effect. It’s become known as one of the best ways to induce offsets. Since discovering that curing large masses of gall with Sevin produces numerous offsets, I have shared this advice with many others who have in turn tried it themselves. I should mention that I have seen evidence of Sevin in powder form damaging tissue, but the liquid form works wonders. This, of course, cannot be done by removing the gall. The gall then grows into several new stems this is a great propagation method for the rare stuff. Not only do we never cut off the gall (unless it’s just part of the inflorescence), we leave it on the rare, non offsetting varieties until it gets rather large, and then we apply Sevin two or three times over a period of two or three weeks. Cutting away the gall will remove a great nimiety of mites, but as one could imagine, countless others remain elsewhere on the plants. It’s what is used in botanical gardens in Africa, and it works wonders here too. Via email from succulent expert and author Duke Benadom of the Los Angeles Cactus & Succulent Society: “I completely agree with your comments on systemics however, the product Sevin (liquid form) works excellently as a topical spray. I simply used a sharp knife to slice the plants well below any signs of infestation. These photos, taken in my own garden, show two different aloes six weeks after gall-removal surgery. If the plant is badly infested, it might be smart to consider not spending twenty dollars on poison for a ten dollar plant." For what members of the "All That Is Kelly Griffin" Facebook group use to control mites, see the rest of the thread.īe sure to scroll down to the Comments for what succulent expert and author Duke Benadom recommends. What if you really want to nuke them? Kelly adds: ".to excise and then treat with chemicals is a good one keeping in mind it is a mite, it needs to be a miticide to have any possibility of success. If you don’t, it just gets more pervasive." You just need to recognize it early and do something. In Agaves you have the weevil and the grease mite. Learning to deal with it is just part of living. I don't, because I agree with aloe expert Kelly Griffin who says, "just about every plant I have grown has some Achilles heel. Remove any flowers with distorted growth. They’re most apt to spread when infested aloes are blooming. Keep in mind the mites are wind-borne and gravity aids them. If you don’t want to get rid of existing plants, at least cut out the knobby growth. After all, it's a breeding ground. Even if you don't mind the galls, do get rid of them before they infest other aloes.Īny aloe is at risk. If an infestation is severe, dispose of the entire plant. Here's what I doĪt first sign, excise affected tissues and bag them for the trash (do not put them in green waste). Mites travel via water, wind, garden tools, and people who find bizarre formations fascinating. Mites inject a chemical that causes cancerous growth. They produce as many as eight generations a year, and each female lays 80 eggs a month. In the UK, Felix rårörda lingon can be obtained from specialist suppliers or online. However, the colour can fade a bit after a couple of months, so I tend to keep some berries in the freezer and make a fresh batch every now and again. Rårörda lingon keeps forever in sterilised jars, thanks to the high level of benzoic acid which acts as a natural preservative. *Sterilise by washing in a dishwasher or by putting rinsed jars in an oven at 125✬ (250✯, gas ½, fan 120✬) for 10 minutes. (Some people squash some of the berries with the back of a spoon to release some of their juice to make it easier to dissolve the sugar, but I try and avoid doing this as I prefer the berries to be left whole.)Ĥ. Store in a cool dark place in sterilised jars*. Have a taste and add a little more sugar if desired, but avoid adding so much sugar that it will not dissolve. Stir or shake every now and again until the sugar has all dissolved, which might take a day or more. Add 50% by weight of caster (superfine) sugar. Weigh the berries and put them in a bowl or a jar.ģ. Pick over the berries to remove any leaves or twigs, rinse them and then drain so the berries are reasonably dry.Ģ. Instead they are usually transformed into rårörda lingon (literally, raw stirred lingonberries). Making rårörda lingonīecause lingonberries are rather bitter they are seldom served on their own. Swedes consume massive quantities of lingonberries, so it is quite common to find offers for 5 kg of lingonberries on markets in Sweden! Most Swedes have a large bag of lingonberries in their freezer. Outside of Scandinavia it is hard to buy fresh lingonberries, but sometimes it is possible to buy frozen lingonberries from specialist shops or online suppliers. Out of season, it is also easy to buy frozen lingonberries in Sweden. They are somewhat messy, as the juice tends to leak so often market traders put on a pair of plastic gloves when serving lingonberries. They are surprisingly inexpensive at around 50 SEK/kg (€5/kg, £4/kg, $3/lb). Buying lingonberriesįresh lingonberries are sold all over Sweden in August and September. As a result Swedish children were traditionally encouraged to have lingonberry jam with porridge for breakfast and to have a portion of lingonberries with many main courses. Eating lingonberries is said to ward off certain cancers and to help prevent some types of infection. Lingonberries are full of powerful antioxidants which are said to neutralise the sun's radiation and help prevent skin damage. Then they become quite sophisticated, as the combination of their natural bitterness with the sweetness from the sugar goes well with game, meat, fish and with several desserts. They have shiny, rather hard skins when fresh, but they are transformed with a little sugar. Their tasteĪlthough the berries might look attractive on bushes they are not good to eat in their raw state as they are quite bitter. They ripen in August and September and are picked with a scrabbler, a wide fork-like tool, which can strip a bush very quickly. Lingonberries grow in the wild in Sweden on small bushes in woodlands and on moorlands. Lingonberries are also known as cowberries and occasionally as mountain or lowbush cranberries, red bilberries or whortleberries. They are considered to be an essential accompaniment to many Swedish dishes, most notably köttbullar (meatballs), kåldomar (stuffed cabbage rolls) and raggmunk(potato pancakes). Lingonberries are widely used in Swedish food. So the liver process ketones that boost the ketosis process in the body. I noticed all the nails holding the pallet together had a thin copper wire soldered to them about half the length of the nail. Cut the nails off with a sawsall between the boards and center rail then just tap whats left of the nails out with a nail set. If you only want the top and bottom boards and not the center rails. With the rails, I just pull nails, using pliers, nippers, pry bars, or whatever else I can find to get a bite on the remaining nail. I end up with 95% of the material salvaged. So, I just take my sawsall and cut the 1 1/2 inch of end off (both ends) and then pry the center rail loose as you did in the vid. Most of the end wood is already split out. They are all flush with the outside rails. Very few of the pallets I get have the overlap on the ends, like this one did. If I don’t use the rails I cut in between the nails and burn them in the fire pit or fireplace. Depending on the project (2 walls and 2 planting tables) I re-insert the nail after the board is cleaned up, just adds a bit more character to the work seeing the rusty nail head. I do the same as many have mentioned using a sawzall and driving out the nail head with a punch. No mater how you do it you will end up with more cracked boards and sore fingers then you want…good luck Reply I gave in and now work around the nails! If you insist buy used ones or let new one sit for a winter, sun, snow, rain, etc…Nails will be much easier to pull out then run boards through plainer for new look. I have worked with pallets a lot and you will work your self to death just to get nails out, make them part of your finished project. You can also drill head off nail and leave the rest in. The nail heads can be carefully be painted black or other colors. Use lumber for rustic furnishings, shelfs, fences, etc. Each slat will have a chunk of wood on it and nail holding it, then carefully cut through nail between both pieces of wood. Wast of time! Cut into main thick cross boards with saws -all cutting through the nails. I then use a punch to get the nailheads out and tinted epoxy to fill the holes with some accent color. In the past i’ve used a reciprocating saw or sawzall and cut the nails using a metal cutting blade so as not to damage my tools and the boards come right off. I just have to work around nail holes and cracks.I end up with about 50 percent firewood, but I am ok with that. I have made work benches and tool cabinets and I now am working on building a chair. It is well worth the work it takes to get them apart. I have been working with wood from pallets recently, huge pallets, some as long as 12ft. I find construction scraps or lumber yard discards a better option at times. You really got to want the look or need cheap wood to do this kind of thing for long. but if I find a good one, I will go to the trouble of digging out the nails. Most times the 2x4s are pretty rough and unuseable anyway. The Sawzall method is the path of least resistance for me too. these days I weigh the benefits and handpick my pallets. This video kinda gives me flashbacks of the struggle. When I started, trying to woodwork on the cheap I used a lot of pallet wood. It designed for breaking pallets apart… Reply This increases the surface area of tension while still separating the top from side Reply Sometimes depending on the thickness of the pallet I would use two blocks and prop them under the pallet board, then hammer the cross-board to push the desired piece off. While it's not too difficult to prevent your laptop from dropping below 30% charge, keeping an eye on it while it charges to stop it from getting to 100% isn't really feasible. The Lithium-ion battery in your MacBook will degrade the least when operating between 30 and 80 percent of its maximum charge level. This should help keep your battery in good shape for longer, and it's something you can't easily do by yourself. I got this laptop in April 2022 and today:Given how difficult and expensive it is to replace a battery on an Apple device, it's understandable why people try to keep them going for as long as possible.ĪlDente was designed to help users maximize battery lifespan by preventing it from charging all the way to 100%. I use my MBP 16 as a desktop machine 99.9% of the time and keep the state of charge around 60-80%. Battery health will drop fast from 100% to 90% and then taper off and drop a lot slower as time goes on - especially if at 100% charge all the time and on wall-power most of the day.ĪlDente helps this health loss by allowing us to keep the % low while on wall power. There are some users with 2000-3000 cycles and still 80%+ health. Cycles aren't necessarily harmful as they used to be - the 1000 cycle limit shows this. High state of charge is harmful to these batteries. This seems entirely plausible to me based on how usage is. So User B: Uses their laptop like a desktop, always on wall power, has 50 cycles and say 90% health. So User A: Uses their laptop in the field - rarely on wall power - has 300 cycles and say 98% health. This is where AlDente comes in (allows you to run off of wall power at a low % of charge). These laptops can run entirely off of wall power if in a desktop like state - meaning that their cycles won't continue counting but they will continue to age - and if they aren't kept at a low state of charge, they will lose health significantly faster being at a high state of charge all the time. Just my opinion and thoughts - these batteries are designed to last 1000 cycles at 80%+ capacity or something like 2-3 years. I've been setting it to 70%, which seems like a fair balance for my use case.)Īnyone else using Aldente on the M1s? What has your experience been so far?Ĭlick to expand.I don't think I'd base it on that alone. (Not sure what percentage is really best yet. Sailing mode is still something I'm trying to figure out, but aside from this it's been simple and has made it very easy to arbitrarily limit the charge at pretty much any level of my choosing. I've been using Aldente for a couple of weeks now, and it's been very nice so far. Modern battery technology is quite a complex science, so I have decided to do everything I can to take care of it, (especially since I set up a new office space where I'm leaving it mostly plugged in now). They tend to degrade more rapidly within the first year or so and then level off (according to the stats of Coconut Battery users at least), so it turns out my battery was fine after all. After realizing I was complaining about a ridiculously minor problem (Seriously, who complains about a battery with 93% health), I did some research on this and discovered that this is pretty much entirely average behavior for the M1s. Definitely not shabby, but these batteries are rated for 1000 cycles, so I rushed to judgment and initially assumed Apple MUST have sent me some kind of a defective battery (ah, Apple, screwing over their customers with lithium ion batteries that, you know, act like lithium ion batteries). I then checked the 2020 and I've been a little less lucky, as it's currently at 149 cycles and is at 92.4%. Absolutely incredible for the original battery on a machine that is nearly a decade old! To my amazement, the old 20 cycles and is at 87.3% battery health. I took both Macs and did two full charge-discharge calibration cycles and then checked Coconut Battery on each. The battery life is still insanely good, so it's had me wondering more about what happens under the hood. I've been using my M1 Macbook Pro for about 9 months, and so far it's been an incredible replacement for my proudly "vintage" 2012. Sony has also given its Adaptive Sound Control feature a boost for the WH-1000XM4. It’s a feature we’ve come across in other headphones before and is nice to have. The headphones use a proximity sensor and acceleration sensors in each ear cup to pause playback when you remove the headphones, and then to automatically start playing again when you put them back on. There are a couple of occasions when we trigger the feature with a cough and an enthusiastic sing-along, but you can just slide a finger up or down on the right touchpad to go back to your music.Īnother new feature for the 2020 model is ‘Wearing Detection’. Helpfully, you can set the sensitivity of Speak-to-Chat in Sony’s Headphones Connect app to try and stop it from going off accidentally. There is a slight delay, though, between when you start to speak and the mode kicking in, which we’d like to see shortened. It’s a neat party trick and we find it works pretty well. The headphones recognise that you are talking and will stop playback and switch to their Ambient Sound mode automatically. You can now engage ‘Speak to Chat’, a feature that allows you to talk to someone while the headphones are still on your head, all without moving a muscle. The Quick Attention feature found on the XM3, where you can cover the right earcup with your hand to hold a conversation, carries across, but Sony has taken the conversational skills of the WH-1000XM4 to a whole new level. If you subscribe to a streaming service that supports tracks encoded in Sony 360 Reality Audio, the WH-1000M4 can also be used to experience the immersive audio format. This allows you to stream high-quality audio wirelessly from a compatible source, including select Android smartphones running Android 8.0 or above. There’s no aptX or aptX HD support, but the Sony’s are compatible with its own LDAC technology. If you’re a frequent flyer they can even take into account changes in air pressure. They optimise the noise-cancelling based on different factors such as the shape of your face and whether or not you wear glasses. If you’re not familiar with this software, it’s basically an auto-calibration program that is activated via a long press of that Custom button. The name might be different, but it carries out all the same duties as before, such as switching between noise-cancelling and Ambient Sound modes and running the NC Optimiser.Īnd you’ll need to run Sony’s NC Optimiser before you use the headphones for the first time. So too has the Ambient/NC ( noise-cancelling) button, though it’s been renamed ‘Custom’ on the XM4. The power button, a USB-C charging port and 3.5mm headphone socket have all carried over from the XM3. Because the grip isn’t as vice-like as some rivals, though, and the fact the headphones still don’t have an IP rating (for water and dust resistance), we wouldn’t recommend using them during exercise. There’s just enough pressure to grip your ears and get a solid seal around them without the headphones feeling too loose. Unlike the XM5, which only fold flat, these XM4 headphones can be folded once more, which makes them even more compact for chucking straight into your bag.Īll these factors combine to produce a very comfortable fit. Overall, the XM4 are lighter by one whole gram, too (254g vs 255g). The head cushion is also slightly slimmer. Speaking of earcups, the WH-1000XM4 are a thinner design, while the pads used are softer and actually 10 per cent larger than those used on the XM3. The gap between the hangar and the cups has been shrunk, creating a more seamless appearance, and the space where they connect to the earcups has been reduced to reduce the potential for any sound leakage. There have been changes to the ‘hangar’ section of the headphone (the hinged fork that hangs down and connects to the earcups). In the XM5 headphones, there's a new 30mm carbon fibre composite dome. The WH-1000XM4 use the same 40mm drivers found in the previous model and the finishes are the same too: Black or Platinum Silver. They still don’t, perhaps, look as premium or stylish as a pair of, say, B&W Px7 S2 or Bose Noise Cancelling 700, but they certainly give the impression that they’re built to last. Things feel slightly more textured compared with the smooth surfaces of the XM3s in our opinion, this helps give the impression that they are slightly sturdier. The first one relates to the plastics used around the earcups and sliders. Sony hasn’t exactly gone back to the drawing board for the WH-1000XM4 over-ear headphones, but XM3 owners will notice a few subtle differences here and there. |
